Sitting Stares
(Poem #1)
Stares stick
like stars in the night sky.
Like thoughts in the mind’s eyes,
my attention is focused on you.
Wondering what you are thinking,
what words want to escape
the scaffolding tip of your tongue,
wanting you to open up and speak.
I send a quivering look to your hands,
holding my breath,
as I wonder what your next move will be.
My mind trembles in excitement,
as my imagination takes over.
I stop as I feel my throat closing in.
Anticipation.
So I clear my throat of phlegm, “ehem”
and flash a smile in your destined direction,
hoping to blind the strength of your will.
But, you sit, still,
unwavered.
Untouched tension.
You speak into the molded silence,
numbing all but one of my senses.
Enraptured by the movement of your mute lips,
with a sitting stare,
I am waiting for your body to speak to me.
